Stunning Victories for Labour in the Greater London Assembly Elections 2012

Both Labour candidates seeking to represent electors in Ruislip, Northwood and Pinner swept to stunning victories in the GLA elections 2012.

In Ealing & Hillingdon Dr Onkar Sahota has made local history by winning the Ealing and Hillingdon seat for the London Assembly for the Labour Party for the first time.

Labour’s Dr Sahota defeated Conservative Councillor Richard Barnes by 3,110 votes, overturning a majority of 28,638.

Dr Sahota, an Ealing GP and Hayes resident, said: "We have had a mountain to climb but we fought a good campaign."

The defeated Conservative Councillor Richard Barnes, had been the GLA member for Ealing and Hillingdon for 12 years and was Boris Johnson’s Statutory Deputy Mayor from 2008 until 2012. He continues to be a L.B. Hillingdon Councillor for the Harefield ward.

In Brent & Harrow Navin Shah held his GLA seat with a huge increase in his majority.

Speaking after the result was announced Navin said "The wait to find out the winner was “tense and frustrating” because an error with the counting system meant the results were not published until after 11.30pm.

He added: “It was worth the wait, and an incredible feeling when I found out I’ve won it again. I feel very humble with the level of confidence I’ve had from the local community and am grateful to them for supporting me. I was also very touched, because when I got home a neighbour had left congratulatory banners and a bottle of nice champagne outside my front door.”

He says that his first campaign will involve him working closely with MP Gareth Thomas to help save Harrow’s custody suites, following the Metropolitan Police Authority's announcement last month that they propose to merge the facility with Brent's.

He said: “It’s one of the key issues facing the borough of Harrow at the moment, because if we close custody suites here, there will be less police on the streets of Harrow.

“I am very committed to tackling crime and will also be addressing the issue of police cuts in the area.”

He added that he would continue lobbying the Mayor for step-free access at Stanmore Station, and would try to ensure that weekend closures on the Jubilee and Metropolitan Lines are kept to a minimum.

He said: “I’ll be watching the Mayor like a hawk. The amount of support I’ve received does put greater pressure on me to work even harder, and I won’t let my people down.”

After more than 12 years in Government 2010 was always going to be a tough challenge for Labour, made even tougher by the very difficult econominc climate caused by the global banking crisis. Even without these conditions the task of taking on the Conservatives in one of their top 10 "safe" consituencies was always going to be a very difficult. With support from our active members our candidate Anita MacDonald managed to hold second place in constituency and hold the swing to the Tories to a level that was nearly 1/3rd below the national swing. Anita ran a very positive campaign and is to be congratulated on the result she achieved in both the General Election and the local council elections where she was returned to continue the great work she performs as a Hillingdon Councillor.
